Meet the GM

Meet our Hotel General Manager – Mr. Ram Bharadwaj

What was your first job in the hotel industry?

My first job was a waiter in a Thai restaurant while completing my Bachelors in Hotel Management.

Tell us about your history / background in the hotel industry?

I am originally from India. Moved in 2008 to Australia to pursue my Masters in International Hospitality. Always had a desire to study further and travel. Currently finishing my Project Management course from eCornell. First job with Accor was a casual night porter in Darwin, two nights a week. Progressed over the next few years within the Front Office department before being selected for the Accor Executive Leadership Program in 2013, which was the turning point in my career. I have also been part of 2 pre-opening properties back to back which I thoroughly enjoyed and has helped me learn a lot about the business and myself.

Where did you study / what qualifications have you earned?

I studied my Bachelors in Hotel Management from Bangalore, India and later pursued my Masters in International Hospitality Management from Adelaide, South Australia.

What do you most look forward to when starting a new role?

I love new challenges. No two properties are the same! The other thing is meeting new people and travelling to new destinations. In the last 9 years, I have lived in 7 different places!

What do you consider your biggest achievement / proudest moment in your work career to date?

They are yet to come! I was very humbled to have received the Chris Frost Award which was presented to me during the Accor Annual Awards for exceptional customer service a few years ago.

Who (if any) are your business mentors / influences?

I am very lucky to have had great mentors throughout my life starting off with my Uncle Prasad who is CEO of his own company and my Mother-in-law who retired recently as a Senior Director of a multi-national company. Both have helped me grow as an individual and as a professional.

Probably the most important influence has been Chris Sedgwick, who was my first GM in Accor. Chris had a great impact in moulding me the professional I am today.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

I enjoy cooking. It is one of the best ways to de-stress on my days off. Apart from that I love photography and going for a long run to clear my head.

Where did you grow up / where are your family from?

I was born in Mysore but grew up in Bangalore which is on South India, also called the Silicon Valley of the East. Most of my family are still based in Bangalore. I come from a family of established engineers and doctors, making me the first person to venture in to hospitality as a career. Happy to see the next generation taking inspiration from me to make hospitality and other “unconventional” industries as their career.

What is your favourite food / cuisine?

I love food, so it’s hard to choose a cuisine. I love everything mum cooks, but I have to say Biryani (Rice dish with meat) & La Zi Ji/ Chongqing Chicken have to be my favorite.

Tell us something about yourself only friends / family would know?

  • I have a very restless personality, can’t sit in a place for more than a minute.
  • A beer connoisseur.
  • Thrash/Heavy Metal fan & a Movie buff
